When I used to hear Muhammed Ali proclaim to the world he was the greatest I used to smile. You see, the greatest of them all was an English footballer named Duncan Edwards

“Resting in Interlaken, Germany was one thing and facing Old Trafford another. When I approached the ground and moved over the bridge along which our supporters had squeezed fifty abreast in their tens of thousands to shout for us, I could scarcely bear to look. I knew the ghosts of the Babes would still be there, and there they are still, and they will always be there as long as those who saw them still cross the bridge, young, gay, red ghosts on the green grass of Old Trafford.”- Sir Matt Busby.

A few notes on today’s match

First and foremost, as been said time and time again, football is not for the faint-hearted. I left the pub and for a couple of hours after my body felt tense and excited from that match. Somewhat wished it could’ve gone on longer. Although with Chelsea’s two chances in the end, I’m not so sure if it’d have been the right wish.

All in all, somewhat disappointed with a point, but from 3-0 down one could hardly complain. Bring on Liverpool next weekend. Bring on that twat Suarez.

De Gea has had his critics throughout the season, including from me.
However, one would be completely foolish to think the boy has not a potential in him. His shot stopping is brilliant (underlined by this save in today’s game), his distribution (more often than not, at least) top class. He’ll become a great keeper one day.
That being said, I still think he shouldn’t be the first choice keeper of a club like United just yet. Time and time again, including today, he’s suspect under crosses. Moreover, the unfortunate reality that he doesn’t speak the language hampers his ability to communicate with his defenders -as apparent in Mata’s goal (though I’d say Evra and Ferdinand were the two major culprits for that goal).
But he’s here and he’s our player for a while, so in the end, there’s nothing to do but to trust the backroom staff in getting him matured, bulked up, and be more confident. Performances like today should do his confidence good, and I can only hope the language thing will come soon so at least the communication part -a very important part of goalkeeping for me- can be solved.
In the mean time, thank you for today David. That save and the one after from Cahill was just as important as Chicharito’s goal.

Late comments on the Utd-Wigan match

Poor decision on the red card.

Valencia is currently a much more reliable option than Young, though Young’s unpredictability will eventually be more valuable.

Berba!

It was a shit game for my fantasy team. Rooney didn’t start, Nani didn’t contribute. Damn it.

The whole Evra-Suarez thing

The argument for Suarez has always been “he’s not a racist”, or “culturally, for Uruguayans, its not derogatory”, or “negro was only meant as an identification”.

Let me ask this: does anyone go around a football pitch identifying the colour of everyone’s skin? No. What do people do in a heated atmosphere? They swear at one another. Call each other names. So the context of the seemingly innocent use of negro has changed, and therefore loses its innocence. It becomes a weapon to insult someone.

Also, with the whole cultural thing, I read this at Tim Vickery’s blog today: Among Suarez’s team-mates these days is Maxi Pereira, who is known as “El Mono” - the monkey. It is a nickname which, apparently, is given and accepted with no offence meant or taken.” That’s just fucked up. In no way shape of form is that okay. Jesus.

So, fuck off Gus Poyet, and fuck off Diego Lugano.

Suarez deserves a punishment. Whether its as severe as 8 games AND a fine, I don’t know. But to say he’s innocent or that he’s a victim is just utter bollocks.
